Mozzarella Stuffed Italian Meatballs With Marinara Sauce

Updated: Oct 17, 2020

This is a favorite in our household, and it is so easy to make. Most recipes call for you to cook the meatballs in a pan, but my trick makes it easier to cook and leaves you with tender, flavorful meatballs with a deliciously gooey center of melted mozzarella.

You can eat these delectable little beauties with any marinara sauce (or make your own), sprinkled with shredded mozzarella or parmesan. If you want, the meatballs can be served on top of freshly cooked pasta or just eaten by themselves, doused in delicious marinara.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound pork Italian sausage (can substitute with turkey Italian sausage)

  • 1 large egg (beaten)

  • 1 cup breadcrumbs

  • 1/4 cup grated parmesan cheese

  • 2 teaspoons minced garlic

  • 1/2 tablespoon of basil

  • 1/2 tablespoon of oregano

  • 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt

  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

  • 4-6 ounces mozzarella , cut into 1/2" cubes (can substitute with 4 mozzarella cheese sticks)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. Spray the cups of a muffin pan, 12 count preferably, with non-stick spray.

  2. Combine the meat, egg, breadcrumbs, parmesan cheese, salt, garlic, onion, black pepper in a bowl.

  3. Using your hands, combined the mixture. Do not squeeze the mixture.

  4. Use a medium cookie scoop or spoon to scoop the meat. Then place a piece of cheese in the center and wrap the meat around the cheese. Form into 1 1/2"  balls and place one ball into each cup of the muffin pan.

  5. Bake uncovered for 30 minutes, or until no longer pink in the middle.

  6. Simmer meatballs with marinara sauce for 10 minutes.
